United-States.htm

Know and understand these terms. Be pepared to discuss them on Monday.

Institutional racism is a pattern of social institutions — such as governmental organizations, schools, banks, and courts of law — giving negative treatment to a group of people based on their race.
Affrimative Action: an action or policy favoring those who tend to suffer from discrimination, especially in relation to employment or education; positive discrimination.
Capitalism: an economic and political system in which a country's trade and industry are controlled by private owners for profit, rather than by the state
Imperialism: a policy of extending a country's power and influence through diplomacy or military force.
Socialism: refers to any system in which the production and distribution of goods and services is a shared responsibility of a group of people. Socialism is based upon economic and political theories that advocate for collectivism. In a state of socialism, there is no privately owned property.
Socialism can exist within countries as an overall economic system or within factions thereof such as corporations, healthcare, public education, and education.
Countries cannot be wholly defined as socialist if they have not declared themselves as such in a constitution or through their national name. Throughout history socialism may have been practiced in many countries but the country itself has not been labeled as socialist.
In theories developed by Karl Marx, socialism is the transitional period between capitalism and communism.
Communism: a political theory derived from Karl Marx, advocating class war and leading to a society in which all property is publicly owned and each person works and is paid according to their abilities and needs
·  In Cuba the hospitals, medical professionals, medicines and medical supplies are all under the control of the Cuban government.
·  In North Korea the farmland, workers and food distribution are all under the control of the North Korean government.
·  In China in the 1950s, Mao developed the "Great Leap Forward" which pushed farmers into communes, took their land and forced them into slave labor.
·  In China today the government controls a highly successful manufacturing industry which generates profits for the government through the export of electronics, toys and other consumer goods.

CEC 2-16-17 World History

Founding of Liberia, 1847

The founding of Liberia in the early 1800's was motivated by the domestic politics of slavery and race in the United States as well as by U.S. foreign policy interests. In 1816, a group of white Americans founded the American Colonization Society (ACS) to deal with the “problem” of the growing number of free blacks in the United States by resettling them in Africa. The resulting state of Liberia would become the second (after Haiti) black republic in the world at that time.
