Liberals believe in government action to achieve equal opportunity and equality for all. It is the duty of the government to alleviate social ills and to protect civil liberties and individual and human rights. Believe the role of the government should be to guarantee that no one is in need. Liberal policies generally emphasize the need for the government to solve problems.

Conservatives believe in personal responsibility, limited government, free markets, individual liberty, traditional American values and a strong national defense. Believe the role of government should be to provide people the freedom necessary to pursue their own goals. Conservative policies generally emphasize empowerment of the individual to solve problems.


Evangelical - Generally conservative, but the media seems to use the term 'evangelical' describe all conservative, American protestants. They emphasize the conversion experience,and the story behind how the individual came to know God and be saved. Evangelicals will sometimes say that Christianity is a "relationship, not a religion." This is indicative of their emphasis on the emotional, feeling results and evidence of salvation. Evangelicals emphasize evangelism also. In exegesis,they may use Historical-grammatical methods. May affair Young Earth Creationism. Evangelicals will emphasize the Bible as inerrant, and as a defining and necessary aspect of the Christian faith.
Mainline - generally seen as liberal towards social issues, but not necessarily so. These Churches may affirm ordination of women, gay marriage, and the ordination of gay individuals. They generally do not work with Charismatic gifts. They will often utilize Historical-criticism. They will likely be more receptive towards ideas of evolution, but likely within a creationist model.
